A console, rebuilt as an object
Pure white from face to ridges, with the iconic Xbox X cut open and covered in clear acrylic. The X stops being a logo and becomes a window — DVD drive on one side, hard drive on the other, the Xbox jewel glowing through the middle. A 2001 box that already looked deliberately industrial, now reframed as something closer to lab equipment.
The build, step by step
- Full teardown. Every layer separated on an anti-static mat. Two decades of dust removed from a console that was already over-engineered when it shipped.
- Clock capacitor service. The original Xbox clock cap is notorious for leaking and damaging the motherboard. Replaced as standard — the difference between a console that survives another decade and one that quietly destroys itself.
- Motherboard cleaning. Full isopropyl alcohol scrub on the main board, capacitor inspection, fresh thermal compound on the CPU and GPU.
- DVD drive service. Drive disassembled, laser pickup cleaned, mechanism tested with multiple disc types.
- Hard drive service. Original HDD cleaned and tested; left at factory capacity.
- X-window mod. The iconic Xbox X cut into the top shell and covered with a sheet of premium clear acrylic, cut on a CO2 laser. The DVD drive and hard drive become visible through the cutout — not stickers, not prints.
- RGB lighting. Multi-color LED array behind the acrylic, controlled from a phone app. Pick the color, dial in the brightness, set the speed. The Xbox jewel glows through the center of the X.
- Shell refinish. Original casing wet-sanded between coats, with the white finish laid down in multiple passes and sealed under an acrylic clear coat for depth and chip resistance.
- Reassembly under spec. Every screw torqued, every panel aligned with a caliper before it leaves the bench.
