A console, rebuilt as an object
Brushed-steel-effect across the top, deep blue underneath. The Super Slim already started life with cleaner geometry than the Fat — we leaned into that, finishing the sliding disc cover with a brushed-steel paint technique and grounding the body in matte blue. Compact, intentional, easy to slot into a shelf full of design objects.
The build, step by step
- Full teardown. Every layer separated on an anti-static mat. The dust and grime of a console that worked through the 2000s, removed.
- Motherboard service. Fresh thermal compound on the Cell processor and RSX GPU — the single most important service on a PS3, and the difference between a console that runs and a console that YLODs. Capacitors inspected and recapped where needed. Internal coin-cell battery replaced.
- Blu-ray drive service. Drive disassembled, cleaned, and tested with multiple disc types — PS3, PS1, and Blu-ray movies.
- Shell refinish. Original casing wet-sanded between coats, with a brushed-steel-effect paint technique on the sliding disc cover and matte blue along the body, sealed under an acrylic clear coat for depth and chip resistance.
- RGB lighting. Multi-color LED array inside, controlled from a phone app. Subtle glow visible through the original ventilation.
- Reassembly under spec. Every screw torqued, every panel aligned with a caliper before it leaves the bench.
